| Recent advances in generative artificial intelligence have once again brought philosophical debates about creativity, meaning, and aesthetic understanding to the forefront. Although contemporary systems can produce images, texts, and other cultural artifacts with aesthetic qualities, it remains unclear whether these capabilities amount to aesthetic understanding or simply demonstrate a successful form of cultural production. This article examines the issue through Ernst Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms and contemporary discussions of the Symbol Grounding Problem. From a Cassirerian perspective, meaning takes shape within symbolic forms and through participation in cultural and historical horizons; aesthetic understanding, therefore, cannot be reduced to information processing or the recognition of formal patterns. The article shows that although vector representations and multimodal AI systems have developed more complex forms of semantic association, there is still insufficient evidence to attribute aesthetic understanding to these systems. On this basis, the study maintains a conceptual distinction between “aesthetic production” and “aesthetic understanding” and argues that the artistic success of generative systems does not necessarily indicate their participation in the symbolic processes through which meaning takes shape within human experience. | ||
