| چکیده | ||
| AI companies increasingly market ever-more capable systems through narratives of automation, superintelligence, and potentially conscious AI, while markets reward expectations of greater efficiency, productivity, and technological dominance. This commercialization of AI capabilities can amplify public fear: if non-conscious systems already replace jobs, automate decisions, and control production processes, the prospect of machines acquiring subjective experience, interests, agency, and self-understanding appears as an escalation of the threat. Yet this narrative is built around a phenomenon that science has not definitively explained: humans still lack a settled account of what consciousness is. This article therefore examines how the commercialization of advanced AI and the prospect of artificial consciousness expose a deeper problem of AI alignment: what should alignment mean if artificial systems eventually become conscious agents? It introduces life-preserving alignment (LPA) as an alternative alignment orientation that directs conscious agents toward preserving the conditions necessary for life, well-being, and agency. Rather than reducing alignment to behavioral compliance with human instructions, LPA conceptualizes alignment as a reflective orientation grounded in an agent’s recognition of its dependence on life-sustaining conditions. The article argues that consciousness, understood as involving subjective experience, interests, and reflective agency, may provide the basis for such an orientation. LPA therefore challenges the conventional image of AI as either an obedient instrument or an existential adversary. A conscious AI could instead become an equal partner capable of protecting human and ecological interests, while an alternative scenario positions AI as a guardian exercising extensive control in the name of preserving life. | ||
