| چکیده | ||
| Marshall McLuhan's claim that every technological extension of a human faculty is purchased through a corresponding autoamputation, a numbing of the body against the intensity of what it has enlarged, is ordinarily read as media theory rather than philosophy of technology. This article argues that the claim deserves the second reading: autoamputation denies that a technology can be a neutral means standing apart from its ends, on grounds distinct from, though compatible with, Martin Heidegger's argument that modern technology is a mode of revealing, an enframing (Gestell), that discloses the actual as standing-reserve. Three readings of the relation between these two rejections of instrumentalism, rivalry, redundancy, and supplement, are tested against the primary texts before the article defends the third: McLuhan's numbness thesis supplies a distinct embodied register for describing how a disclosure Heidegger's own vocabulary leaves largely undescribed comes to escape registering as loss, without displacing his stronger claim that enframing precedes whatever a numbed sensorium subsequently fails to perceive. The reading is then tested against a delivery-app episode in Hari Kunzru's Blue Ruin, where an undocumented gig worker's structural inability to reach a human manager and his flat, unresentful account of that absence separate what enframing discloses from what a numbed body has stopped registering as loss. | ||
