| Discipline-specific academic wordlists (DSAWLs) have become essential resources for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction, yet their methodological development remains insufficiently documented. This systematic review examines 44 peer-reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2025 that developed DSAWLs from written corpora. The analysis investigates publication trends, disciplinary coverage, corpus size and type, counting units, word-selection criteria, treatment of general vocabulary, software tools, and validation practices. Results revealed a steady increase in DSAWL research since 2006, with medicine, science and engineering, and applied linguistics receiving the greatest attention, while Iran and China produced the highest number of studies. Corpus sizes ranged from fewer than 200,000 to 74 million tokens, with most studies relying on research articles. Word families remained the dominant counting unit, and most lists excluded high-frequency general vocabulary. Range and AntWordProfiler were the most widely used software tools, yet only one-third of the wordlists underwent formal validation. The review identifies persistent methodological gaps, including limited disciplinary coverage, inconsistent selection criteria, and inadequate validation. It concludes with recommendations for larger balanced corpora, lemma-based units, diverse source texts, expanded attention to spoken corpora, and rigorous validation procedures. | ||
