AI on the Horizon of Interdisciplinary Thinking: From Disciplinary Knowledge to Symbiotic Intelligence | ||

| Artificial intelligence is becoming an epistemic infrastructure—a computational environment that increasingly shapes what can be asked, represented, searched, evaluated, and imagined across the sciences, humanities, and professions. This development marks a transformation in the architecture of knowledge. The modern university was constructed around disciplinary differentiation, producing depth and rigour but also fragmenting inquiry into increasingly specialised domains. Contemporary challenges—climate change, pandemics, inequality, geopolitical instability, and the future of education—do not conform to these divisions. AI appears within this situation as both an outcome of disciplinary specialisation and a force capable of reorganising it. This paper argues that AI is not simply accelerating disciplinary research but creating a shared computational environment through which different forms of knowledge can be translated, compared, recombined, and mobilised. Drawing on the ecology of mind (Bateson), distributed cognition (Hutchins), extended mind theory (Clark & Chalmers), posthumanist cognition (Hayles), and the emerging philosophy of symbiotic intelligence, the paper develops a differentiated relational ontology for understanding human–AI knowledge production. It introduces the cognitive intraface as the site at which heterogeneous cognitive systems become mutually consequential, and transdialogism as the movement of meaning across incompatible representational regimes (Matson). The paper examines dialogue, dialogical experimentation, and Wittgensteinian language-games as practices through which interdisciplinary understanding can be cultivated rather than merely simulated. It then addresses the political economy of AI as cognitive infrastructure, arguing that foundation models constitute a new architecture of epistemic power requiring public governance, transparent stewardship, and democratic accountability. The concept of knowledge socialism is proposed as an alternative to cognitive enclosure. The paper concludes by distinguishing intelligence from wisdom. AI can synthesise information and contribute to knowledge production, but intelligence alone cannot determine worthwhile ends. The normative culmination of symbiotic intelligence is collective artificial wisdom and an Eco-AI civilization—one judged not by the ubiquity or autonomous power of intelligent machines, but by its capacity to integrate human flourishing, ecological sustainability, cultural plurality, democratic participation, open science, and responsible AI governance. The central thesis is that AI is becoming the infrastructure of interdisciplinary thought, but it does not automatically produce understanding. | ||
